Charity paused outside the bedroom, her thoughts in a rush. Seeing Holden talk about music had given her a new view of his personality. He’d been different, relaxed, and forgotten about his struggles to walk.

She took the door knob in her hand, conscious of her mother’s sharp gaze, yet still didn’t enter. Her mom suspected the truth, and standing here, not going in what was supposed to be her marriage bed wasn’t helping that image. Charity took a breath and at last opened the door, meeting Holden’s gaze. “You’re not sleeping in that are you?” She nodded toward his blue jeans. She hesitated at the end of the bed.

“Probably,” he said. “Number one, I can’t unbutton them.”

That was an obvious reason. She’d helped him remove his shirt earlier and washed his hair over the sink, which he said gave him a neck ache, but had gone no further than that in helping him bathe.

“And the other?” she asked.

“I don’t usually sleep in anything at all.”

Curling her hand over her mouth, Charity gave a cough. “That’s ... that’s a good reason.” She caught her breath. “But it can’t be comfortable to sleep in your jeans. Why not your jockey shorts?”

His lips formed a silly boyish expression. “I thought you were afraid of those.”

“I’m more afraid of the absence of them now.”

A laugh escaped, and he wiped moisture from the corners of his eyes. His joy brought a smile to her face.

“What about you?” he asked. “I believe I was given a promise.”

“You heard that, huh?”

Her nervousness increased. She’d known that would work, and had actually surprised herself by saying it. But now, faced with following through, her doubts returned.

He’d stated his intention up front earlier, and she hadn’t been all that surprised. They’d gotten close, much closer than she expected when she’d accepted his proposal. Still, acting on their mutual attraction was way beyond anything she’d planned for.

He touched his right lobe. “My ears work well. So where is it?”

She pulled the nightgown from behind her back and dangled it by the straps. “Right here.” The red satin fabric shimmered in the light.

“Tell me,” he said. “Why haven’t you worn that? You had on that old, ratty t-shirt yesterday.”

She laid the gown over her arm and raised one finger. “Let’s see, I had two reasons.”

He pursed his lips, crookedly. “Go ahead.”

“Number one, it bunches up when I sleep.” She raised a second finger.

“Doesn’t seem like such a problem to me,” he replied.

He would say that. She made a face. “Number two, I didn’t want to give you any false impressions.”

His brows drew together involuntarily. “False impressions? Like what?”

“Like an invite.”

His grin broadened. “And now?”

“And now we have a deal,” she said. She paused, and he waved her on. “But it comes in stages.”

“Now, wait a minute. You said ...”

She wrinkled her nose at him. “I know what I said, and I’ll do it. But you have to earn it.” She laid the nightgown on the end of the bed and moved to his side.
